Cardiovascular Diseases (Heart Diseases)
Cardiovascular diseases are diseases which affect the heart or the blood vessels. Cardio stands for the word heart whereas vascular represents the blood vessels.
They can therefore be classified into cardiac and vascular diseases. The diseases in each category are listed below.
These are the diseases that affect the heart. They include:
- Angina pectoris
- Myocardial infarction
- Congenital heart disease
- Valvular heart disease
- Infective endocarditis
- Pericardial diseases
- Chronic constrictive pericarditis
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Rheumatic fever
- Myocardial ischaemia
- Ischaemic heart disease
- Cardiogenic shock
- Cardiac or heart arythmias or dysrhythmias
These are diseases of the blood vessels. There are those that affect arteries and those that affect veins. Those which involve arteries are:
- Coronary artery diseases such as myocardial infarction and myocardial angina.
- Raynaud's disease
- Thromboangitis obliterans. Also known as Buerger's disease.
Those which involve the veins are:
- Varicose veins
- Venous thrombosis
- Venous insufficiency
